Our Quality Naturally programme aims to reduce our impact on the planet and improve the lives of the people who make and consume our products. The strategy uses our eight strategic pillars to deliver our responsible business vision by 2025.

Transparency

We are developing industry-leading transparency solutions and openly reporting our responsible business progress. We are committed to ensuring the integrity and traceability of the raw materials in our products and this includes the meat, fish, ingredients and packaging. We have full traceability back to the farms and fishing vessels that supply the slaughter operations and primary processing factories in our supply chains.

We are active members of the Food Industry Intelligence Network, where we compile industry-wide compliance statistics and share intelligence on suspected food fraud.

We publicly report and are benchmarked in carbon footprint and deforestation through the Carbon Disclosure Portal.

Animal Welfare

Maintaining a high level of animal welfare is central to our values and integral to our business, in order to fully meet our customers' standards and their consumers' expectations.

We have been recognised for our commitment by the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare, ranking in Tier 2 of the global welfare benchmark in 2019. We are also highlighted in the report for our supplier engagement. 

We are involved in a number of industry working groups to support the progression of animal welfare, including the European Roundtable on Sustainable Beef and Global GAP standards.

Hilton Food Group is part of the Food Industry Initiative on Antimicrobials, which has the stated vision of ‘Retailers, manufacturers, processors and food service companies coming together to promote and support responsible antimicrobial use and action on antimicrobial resistance.' The intention of this initiative is to support and engage with existing industry groups working in this area to ensure that work is aligned and avoids any duplication of effort.

Environment – Resourceful Factories

Our operations are designed from the ground up to minimise our impact on the environment and we are actively collaborating to drive sustainability in our supply chains.

We are committed to assessing and continuously reducing the impacts of our operations. This includes reducing our waste, reusing or recycling where practicable, and exploring how we can improve biodiversity around our sites. We are also improving the data collection capabilities in our factories to give a detailed breakdown of live energy and water use, which allows us to actively manage our energy in real time. Climate-related issues are integrated into multi-disciplinary company-wide risk identification, assessment and management processes.

Food Waste

We have committed globally as a 'Friend of Champions 12.3', an initiative dedicated to accelerating progress towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Target 12.3 by 2030.

This target aims to halve per capita global food waste, at retail and consumer level as well as reducing food losses along production and supply chains by 2030. We are measuring our food waste at every site and case studies highlighting the progress we are making to achieve this target in the UK were published on the Tesco website in 2018. We also publicly reported our UK food waste volumes for the first time in 2018.

Sustainable Packaging

Our Hilton packaging sustainability strategy involves using our scale to drive the transformational development of retail and supply chain packaging materials aligned to circular economy recycling infrastructures. We achieve this through working on innovative solutions in partnership with our suppliers and industry experts to ensure we are using the most sustainable packaging across our value chain.

Our ultimate goal is to use packaging that is fully recyclable and widely recycled, and contains a high proportion of recycled material with the lowest possible carbon footprint.

We are involved with both UK and European Plastics Pacts led by WRAP - an initiative that tackles plastic pollution by ensuring that all packs are fully recyclable and contain recycled materials.

Ethical Trade

Hilton promotes the principle of non-negotiable ethics and uses collaborative action to improve the lives of workers across our supply chains. We work together with our customers and suppliers in collaborative forums to tackle ethical issues in supply chains and share best practice on ethical recruitment.

Hilton Food Group holds membership in the Food Network for Ethical Trade (FNET) and we are an elected member of the Strategic Advisory Group.

SEA Alliance

Hilton Seafood is a founding member, and we were the first chair, of the Seafood Ethical Action Alliance (SEA Alliance). The SEA Alliance provides a platform for engagement, collaboration on emerging issues, best practice solutions and acts as a forum for collective action.

SEDEX

Hilton holds full membership of SEDEX, which is a collaborative platform for the confidential sharing of responsible sourcing data and social compliance audits by our supply chains. 

UK Soy Sourcing

We have joined the UK Roundtable on Sustainable Soya alongside our retail partners, where we have made a joint commitment to help protect the forests in South America from further deforestation.

The well-being of our People and their Communities

Hilton is committed to ensuring our people are working safely and with regard for the well-being of others and the environment.

Health and Safety

We monitor and review all near misses, incidents and accidents in the workplace so that we can take appropriate action to improve working conditions, whilst remaining focused on reducing both the absolute number of accidents and the number of serious accidents.

Social Responsibility

As part of our commitments to well-being and sustainability, we continue to support the communities and local charities where we operate.

The Hilton Food Group Charitable Foundation recently promoted our third charitable golf day raising £120,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and the Cure Parkinson’s Trust.

Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)

Our sites undergo independent third-party accreditation to a GFSI-recognised certification scheme. Retail customers make frequent visits to our sites, including unannounced audits and visits as part of their own surveillance. This level of attention is a valuable part of our Total Partnership approach and gives consumers confidence that we can consistently meet their expectations. All of our sites received the highest level audit results in 2019.
